X-Men: First Class Screenwriter Tapped For Red Sonja Reboot

Remember that Red Sonja film that was about to happen around a decade ago? Yeah, I’ve forgotten about it too. Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan were originally attached to it, and they even had a panel back in 2008 San Diego Comic-Con (I still have the T-shirt from that panel somewhere, which probably proves that I should throw away more of my clothes sometime soon).

Obviously, that never happened, and the film has since slipped through the hands of director Simon West and writer Christopher Cosmos. Late last year, it was revealed that Millennium would be producing a new Red Sonja film that would be in the same vein as the recently-released Wonder Woman. So don’t expect this to be a film made with the male gaze in mind.

Now, the studio has announced that they have hired a screenwriter to tackle the script. On board to do so is X-Men: First Class and Thor screenwriter Ashley Edward Miller. He also has credits on shows like Andromeda, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, and Black Sails. Needless to say, he has some real credibility.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to faithfully adapt the amazing Hyborean world Robert E. Howard created, and inject it with Sonja’s intelligence, ferocity, and fearless humanity,” Miller said in a statement. “I want people to love Sonja the way I love her, and walk out of the theater understanding why she’s so popular and enduring. Sonja is an icon.”
