Zachary Levi Happy His MCU Character Was Killed Off

You may or may not remember this, but Shazam! star Zachary Levi had a brief stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Fandral one of the Warriors Three in the Thor franchise. Interestingly enough, he was originally set to play the character in the first Thor film, but due to his involvement with Chuck, Josh Dallas had to take on the role. Ironically enough, Dallas’ and Levi’s roles were reversed when Dallas’ commitment to Once Upon a Time prevented him from joining Thor: The Dark World, leaving Levi to step in.

And then Thor: Ragnarok came along. This was the film that killed off dozens of characters, all while smiling. One such casualty was Levi’s Fandral, who took a few swords to the chest and gut, resulting in his untimely demise. One would think this would be a sad thing for Levi, but as he revealed to a bunch of press during the set visit of Shazam!, it was anything but sad for him.

“When I got cast as Fandral…though I wasn’t able to do it, I knew that the Warriors Three could be really fun characters if they ever developed them. They just didn’t. They didn’t. If [Fandral] didn’t die, I might still be under contract with Marvel and I never would have been able to get this job. And I say f— that! This is the coolest thing ever. I’m so happy.”

Levi does have a point. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe films have been great, in order to make really impactful and safe movies, the stories tend to have to focus on one or two characters. And in an effort to focus on the cooler aspects of Thor, they really had to let go of some of the older elements.

But, when one door closes, another opens, as they say. Levi is now taking on the role of Shazam, and if his interviews are any indication, he’s having the time of his life. Not a bad way to redirect one’s career, eh?
