D23 Released 85-Year-Old Disney Cartoon ‘Harem Scarem’
In celebration of the 85th anniversary of Oswald, D23, Disney fan club and Walt Disney archives have released the cartoon “Harem Scarem†from its deep vaults.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was the original character created by Walt Disney when he was an animator for Universal Pictures before he launched his own production company. It was also Universal’s first animated cartoon series, but Universal held on to the rights for several decades.
In 2006, Disney CEO Bob Iger negotiated a trade with Universal for a swap to trade Oswald back to Disney in exchange of allowing sportscaster Al Michaels to return to NBC Sports.
Oswald is slowly making his way back into Disney animation recently, which included an appearance in the Disney video game “Epic Mickey†and is rumored to be the leading character for its video game sequel.
In celebration of Oswald’s milestone, “Harem Scarem†is being shown to the public for the first time. More of Oswald drawings and artwork will be shown at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif. on July 6 as part of the “Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives.â€
