Alicia Silverstone Thinks She Could Pull Off A Better Batgirl Today Than Before

– by Seth McDonald

Legend has it that back in 1997 there was a Batman movie produced that was so terrible, fans have tried their best to erase it from their memories, many even go so far as to deny its existence. This film introduced Batgirl to the big screen and cast Alicia Silverstone in the role. While Silverstone herself wasn’t the driving force behind the movie’s failure, she was part of a collective of bad ideas implemented in the film.

Overstuffed with too many villains and plots, the film starred George Clooney as the Caped Crusader, Chris O’Donnell as the Boy Wonder, Robin (sporting a Nightwing-inspired suit), and as mentioned, Alicia Silverstone as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. Among some of the more famous problems with the film were nipples on the Batsuit, a Bat Credit Card, and the cringeworthy lines delivered by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze.

Silverstone spoke with USA Today recently, and with Joss Whedon bringing a solo Batgirl film to the big screen, she talked about how she wouldn’t mind another shot at the character.

“I feel like I could do a much better Batgirl now than I did then. It would be fun to tackle it again,” said Silverstone. “Because I’m older and my acting is better. I know I would bring so much more to it.”

Silverstone was only 21 years old when cast as Batgirl.

“I was just a baby,” she continued. “It was a different thing. But I had fun back then. And I think it would be fun to do it again.”

Unfortunately for Silverstone, it’s highly unlikely DC would bring in anyone associated with that movie on for a bit part. It wouldn’t be anything personal against Silverstone, but the last thing the DC wants to do is remind fans of that film. Though if offered a role she would consider it.

“I’m open to anything, whatever people bring to me and whatever the best choice is for that time,” said Silverstone.

To try an bring Batgirl into an already unstable DC extended universe seems an unnecessary burden at this point. DC looks to be once again scrambling to play catch up to Marvel.  However, if Wonder Woman and Justice League are able to turn the tide of the DCEU this year, it would then make more sense to introduce new characters.

Silverstone can next be seen in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul which hits theaters May 19 2017.
