This may be the year of the video game movie. The year that Hollywood knows for sure that video game adaptations are the way of the future. between films like WARCRAFT and ASSASSIN’S CREED, there’s a good chance that mainstream audiences and critics alike will connect with a film based on a video game. And if a new report from Tracking Board is any indication, the folks over at the studios producing ASSASSIN’S CREED are banking on it.
The report claims that New Regency hard at work at creating another sequel for the anticipated film. The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel, and stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, all of whom already collaborated together on last year’s critically acclaimed film, MACBETH.
In ASSASSIN’S CREED, Fassbender plays the character of Callum Lynch, a man who “discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.”
The fact that the studio is going forward with this can only be good news. Clearly, the studio is loving what they’re seeing so far, and believes the audience will likely connect with the finished product. If this indeed happens as planned, they’ll already be underway with the next film, and can get the product out as soon as possible to meet demand. However, don’t expect this to be a guarantee of a sequel. They’re likely not tobegin the actual production of the film until after the first one comes out, and until that point, the studios can really pull the plug whenever. Just consider this a smart move on the studio in preparation of the best case scenario.
