Well, just when you think James Cameron could not possibly provide an even higher level of genius, he goes right to the old chalkboard and comes up with this strange and unique idea known as “The Family Concept.” I can not for the life of me think of any other movies with this unparalleled approach.
We Got This Covered was able to interview Sam Worthington the star of Avatar 2 in New York, while promoting his new film The Shack. He talks about this incredible new concept, and discusses the lengthy time it is taking to get the film made.
“They’re going to be shooting concurrently. The plan is to have some time in between, I think, but these things are always ambiguous until they start. We’re still set to start in the summer, though. James needed time to perfect the scripts. Whenever he says jump I go because he’s the man. I’ve read all the scripts, they’re great. This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he’s got a family now.
“This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.”
Clearly, Cameron must have watched The Pursuit of Happyness (or maybe he actually watched Happiness) and will put the family story into an admittedly technological breakthrough of an immense world where at least the graphics can be compelling at times, but this movie already sounds like a snooze-fest.
In the interview Worthington says that, “The film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen.” He goes on to say, “The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family.” Worthington is likely referring to the grandness of Pandora (the world The Na’Vi live on) and not simply a Father/Son dramatic story. However, the problem with Avatar was indeed the stale story, despite how fantastic the movie itself looked. My hope is that Cameron learned from his mistakes, and with all the years he had to work on a script; we may be in for something decent.
Honestly, the movie may not even be released until 2020 or later. Avatar 2 is not set to start filming until this summer, and the history of Cameron would suggest a 2019 or 2020 release. Sigourney Weaver was quoted in saying that she was doubtful we would see the movie next year [2018]. The largest issue is the fact that Cameron is penning Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 all concurrently. Avatar itself was almost a 3 hour film, so one could only imagine, especially with a few rewrites thrown in, just how long that process could end up taking.
Hopefully, he will scratch the whole “family” tie-in and focus more on the Na’Vi getting slaughtered by us terrible humans. Are you guys happy to hear that Avatar 2 is finally about to get started filming? Do you think the story will be subpar yet again? If you are curious about Happiness, you may be better off leaving that movie alone, and do not under any circumstance watch it with your kids, parents, or dog.
