BLACK PANTHER: Official Synopsis & Full Cast List Revealed!

Like many of Marvel Studio’s superheroes, Black Panther is one that could have been ruined by his execution in Captain America: Civil War. To get audiences to respond to a man who dressed up as — and fights like — a cat was bound to be difficult in a world that hops between sci-fi and grounded hyper-realism. Would Black Panther come across as intended, or would he look silly and campy in this universe of high-tech supers?

The result was a joy to watch. His fighting style was vicious, his costume amazingly faithful — and yet very practical. Better still was the character arc they managed to put in that film. On the heels of his father’s death, T’Challa was hell-bent on getting revenge. It was only after seeing the Avengers get torn apart that he realized the errors of his thinking.

So what’s next for Black Panther? We know that he has an upcoming movie next year, and we know that Creed director Ryan Coogler will be taking the helm, but what sort of struggle will we see him go through?

Thursday afternoon, Marvel released its first official synopsis of the flick. Check it out below!

“Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.”

As expected, it looks like this movie won’t be an origin story for the character, but based on previous reports, we know that there will be flashbacks, so there’s a good chance this film will be part flashback, mostly new narrative.

But who will be the new villain (or “old enemy,” as the synopsis states)? Our guess is Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue, who we saw in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and who is confirmed for this film. We also wonder how The Winter Soldier may work into this movie. When last we saw, he was getting put back on ice and hidden in Wakanda. With the nation under attack, I can hardly imagine he wouldn’t play into it all somehow. Though if Sebastian Stan will be making his return as The Winter Soldier, Marvel is playing that card close to its chest, as it’s also revealed the cast list for the superhero film, and nowhere on it is Stan.

Take a look at the list below, which confirms Martin Freeman and Andy Serki’s return!

“Chadwick Boseman (Captain America: Civil War,  Get on Up), Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Fruitvale Station), Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 12 Years a Slave), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead, upcoming All Eyez on Me), Martin Freeman (Hobbit trilogy, Sherlock), Daniel Kaluuya (upcoming Get Out, Sicario),  with Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett (American Horror Story, London Has Fallen), with Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Lee Daniels’ The Butler), and Andy Serkis (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens).

“Additional cast members include Letitia Wright (Urban Hymn, Glasgow Girls), Winston Duke (Person of Interest, Modern Family), Florence Kasumba (Captain America: Civil War, Emerald City), Sterling K. Brown (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) and John Kani (Captain America: Civil War, Coriolanus).”
