Did The FIFA World Cup Hurt Supergirl’s Opening Weekend?

Did the FIFA World Cup Hurt Supergirl‘s Opening Weekend? Why Soccer Could Be an Overlooked Box Office Villain

Warner Bros. and DC Studios were hoping Supergirl would continue the momentum established by last year’s Superman, but instead the film stumbled out of the gate with an estimated $68 million worldwide opening weekend, including just $38 million domestically, falling well below industry expectations.

While early analysis has focused on superhero fatigue, mixed audience reception, and stiff competition from Pixar’s Toy Story 5, another factor may have quietly worked against the film’s global launch: the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup isn’t just another sporting event, it’s one of the largest entertainment spectacles on the planet. This year’s expanded tournament features 104 matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, drawing millions of fans into stadiums, fan festivals, sports bars, and living rooms around the world.

For movie theaters, that’s significant.

Historically, major World Cup matches have reduced cinema attendance in soccer-heavy markets throughout Europe, Latin America, Africa, and parts of Asia. Rather than heading to multiplexes, audiences often spend their weekends watching their national teams compete.

It’s one reason Hollywood studios have frequently adjusted international release schedules to avoid opening major films during the tournament’s biggest matches.

Timing Matters

Supergirl debuted as the World Cup entered its knockout stage, a period when fan interest reaches its highest point.

Unlike domestic sporting events that primarily affect one country, the World Cup commands simultaneous global attention. That creates a unique challenge for blockbuster films that depend on international ticket sales.

For superhero films in particular, overseas markets have become increasingly important. In recent years, international audiences have often accounted for more than half of a comic book film’s worldwide box office.

If even a modest percentage of moviegoers in soccer-centric countries choose a World Cup match over a trip to the theater, those lost ticket sales can quickly add up across dozens of territories.

Not the Only Reason

To be clear, the World Cup isn’t solely responsible for Supergirl‘s disappointing debut. Several factors including mixed reviews, softer than expected audience scores, continued superhero franchise fatigue, and strong competition from Pixar’s Toy Story 5, which remained the No. 1 film during the weekend all played a part in the disappointing debut.

Even before release, some box office observers warned that launching during the World Cup could suppress international earnings, particularly in Europe and Latin America, where soccer often dominates entertainment spending during the tournament.

This isn’t a new phenomenon. For decades, studios have treated the World Cup as a major scheduling consideration. During previous tournaments, distributors have reported noticeable declines in movie attendance during key matches, prompting some studios to delay international openings or stagger release dates to avoid direct competition with the global sporting event.

The strategy reflects a simple reality: when the World Cup is on, it often becomes the biggest show in town.

Looking Ahead

Whether Supergirl can recover will depend on its staying power over the coming weeks, especially after the World Cup concludes. If the film benefits from stronger weekday attendance and improved post-tournament business, analysts may view its opening weekend through a different lens.

For now, however, Supergirl finds itself caught between two entertainment giants: a crowded summer movie season and one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

The World Cup may not be the primary reason the latest DC adventure struggled at the global box office, but it likely didn’t do the film any favors.
