This weekend sees the release of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, the sixthfilm in the X-MEN franchise, and the ninth film in the X-MEN Cinematic Universe. It’s a franchise that’s certainly had its ups and downs, and while many critics agree that APOCALYPSE has its strengths, on the whole, it seems to be an underwhelming installment in the franchise.
As of this writing, the film has a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and around 210 reviews counted total. At the end of the it all, there’s likely to be an extra thirty or forty reviews, and potentially 150 (though that seems less likely). As such, it’s possible for this to go up or down even more, but the sample size is likely large enough to definitively call this one a mixed response. Certainly, a 47% is a “rotten” score, but to say that around five out of ten critics would recommend the film isn’t necessarily the worst it could’ve done.
For every mixed response, there was a few who genuinely enjoyed the film. Our editor-in-chief Kellvin Chavez loved the film, and wouldn’t stop talking about how much “heart” the damn thing had, which speaks to the subjectivity of the medium. If you want to listen to Kellvin’s impressions, check them out below. They start at about 01:18:10 into the episode.
With all that in mind, we want to hear what you thought of the film. While the film was officially scheduled to hit theaters today, there were plenty of 8pm showings last night. What did you think? Did the film deliver all the action and emotion you wanted to see in the conclusion to the FIRST CLASS trilogy of films? What were the strengths and weaknesses of the movie?
