‘Django Unchained’ Actor Joins Jones, Cassel, and Vikander in ‘Bourne 5’
Ever since we broke the story that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass were set to return to the world of Jason Bourne, fans have been very excited. After all, the original Bourne films were credited with reinvigorating the espionage genre by bringing tense, gritty real-world trappings to films that had become all gloss and bombast thanks to films like Mission: Impossible II and Tomorrow Never Dies. They were spy action films for The Thinking Man.
After the first two films came out and blew the doors off the spy genre while doing considerable business and achieving critical acclaim, suddenly the next jaunts for characters like Ethan Hunt and James Bond (Mission: Impossible III and Casino Royale) were filled with more grounded characters, grittier action, and more intimate stories. With the M:I and 007 franchises now branching back off into their own directions again, all eyes are on Bourne 5 to see if it can still bring that fresh, exciting energy that set it apart from the pack when the first film came out in 2002.
While Greengrass didn’t come on until the first sequel, The Bourne Supremacy, his partnership with Damon is viewed as what took the franchise to the next level. With that duo back onboard, the project has the clout to attract some considerable talent. The Hollywood Reporter has just announced that Django Unchained‘s Ato Essandoh will be joining other series newcomers Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel, and Alicia Vikander.
The Bourne newbies will be joining series holdovers Damon and Julia Stiles in the new film, which is slated for a July 29, 2016 release.
