Is ’28 Months Later’ On The Horizon?
When 28 Days Later came out in 2003, it sort of revitalized the zombie horror genre. Directed with indie edge and verve by Danny Boyle, and presenting its zombies as raging, running maniacs, it changed the way mainstream filmgoers thought of the genre. Up until then, the usual representation of the creatures was the George Romero kind- the slow, lurching, grunting zombies. The film was well-received, and turned an $8 million budget into a worldwide gross of $82 million. When its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, came out in 2007 and was also a moderate hit, the natural assumption that we’d be getting a sequel. But those talks eventually stalled out.
Now Alex Garland, who wrote the first and produced the second, says there have been serious talks about producing 28 Months Later. Better yet, it sounds like Boyle may return to the director’s chair for it, after serving as a producer on Weeks and letting Juan Carlos Fresnadillo handle the directing duties.
“We’ve just started talking about it seriously,†Garland told IGN. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.“
So while it could be a ways off, it sounds like 28 Months Later could be coming together. Thoughts?
