Is Natalie Portman In Thor: Ragnarok? New Tweet From Director Taika Waititi Raises The Question

Marvel Studios certainly seems to have a difficult time hanging on to some of their early leading women. Both Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman have always played characters that seemed destined to get left behind in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Portman’s Jane Foster seemed especially vulnerable. In Thor: The Dark World, they had somehow managed to make the plot revolve around her completely, all while giving her absolutely nothing to do.

It surprised no one when it seemed that Thor: Ragnarok would take Thor away from Earth, and away from Jane Foster. While that’s not necessarily a confirmation that she’d have absolutely nothing to do, between the direction of the plot, and Natalie Portman seeming to have little interest in returning to the MCU, it didn’t bode well for her. However, a recent tweet from Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has given us a bit to think about.

Check out the tweet below:

Had this tweet not had the #Ragnarok in it, I would have been totally willing to let this go. The first photo is an image from León: The Professional, a Luc Besson film from 1994 that served as Portman feature film debut. The photo next to it is from 2000’s Where the Heart Is. One would assume that the photo is just a playful director pointing out the visual similarities between these two characters…but it all comes back to that hashtag. Why the hashtag?

Yes, I’ll be the first to admit, that as a member of the film-covering media, it’s in our best interest to read into things like this. That being said, there’s no way Waititi didn’t see fans’ confusion coming. But what could it mean for Jane Foster? Will she make an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok? Will she end up having a sensuous love affair with Groot? I’d say the latter is the best possibility (mostly), but Marvel Studios directors have been known to mislead in the past, so I wouldn’t put it past Waititi to sit back on his couch, twirl his mustache, and let morons like us speculate.

What do you think this means? Is Waititi teasing the return of Jane Foster? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
