A little over a week ago, Ben Affleck took to Twitter to tease the character Deathstroke. The footage showed the character in full merc attire stepping down from what looks like the back of a cargo jet. Many suspected that this was footage from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Justice League film, and while it’s still not clear if that’s the case, it was later confirmed that Deathstroke would actually be the main villain in the Ben Affleck-directed standalone Batman film.
Once that announcement was made, fans went rabid on the internet — in the best way possible. Speculation began as to who would play the cold-hearted mercenary. This guy would have big shoes to fill, too, since Manu Bennett did such an amazing job bringing Slade Wilson to life in the TV show Arrow in what was the last strong season for the show, in my opinion. Surprisingly enough, the buzz I heard all pointed back to one person: Joe Manganiello.
For one reason or another, the Magic Mike and True Blood actor rose to the top of a lot of fans’ list. As someone not intensely familiar with his work, I couldn’t say whether or not his acting chops were fit for the role, but there was no denying that he looked the part.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, DC Entertainmentchief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed that Joe Manganiello would, in fact, be donning the orange and black suit for the upcoming Batman film. The exec would not, however, confirm whether or not we could expect to see the baddie in Justice League. I suppose some secrets are best kept as secrets.
