There was recently a bit of hubbub surrounding the production of Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible 5. There were reports that the film’s ending was getting re-done, and rumors started flying that there could be trouble because of that. McQuarrie took to twitter then, to debunk the rumors and- in a more recent flurry of answers for fans- offered further insights on what happened as well as shedding some light on the movie itself.
Rather than post up the entire #McQAndA, I’ll just narrow it down to its most notable revelations:
- The finale wasn’t reshot. It required extensive prep time, and is actually being shot right now.
- He confirmed that other writers had helped him out with the film, but only because his role as the director was too time-consuming.
- The subject of time kept coming up, with McQuarrie constantly implying that he felt like there weren’t enough hours in a day. He mentioned time being short several times: He listed “Time” as the primary challenge with making the film, he says “Never enough time” to shoot the most suspenseful scenes, and he says now they’re in a “big f’n hurry” thanks to the film’s new release date.
- McQuarrie says that fans hoping for a more old-school experience that almost feels like a big screen adaptation of one of the old TV episodes “won’t be disappointed.”
- In keeping with the “old-school” mantra, McQuarrie says that the other IMF team members will be getting more screen time, that composer Joe Kraemer is going for a “retro” sound, and that there’ll be plenty of nods for the fans.
- A trailer and full title will be revealed/announced very soon.
- The trailer will apparently make crystal clear what McQuarrie did to make M:I 5‘s storyline stand out as different from the previous films.
- Both Paula Patton and Maggie Q were asked to return for the film, but both were unavailable.
- The villain will be played by Sean Harris- the recent BAFTA Award winner for his work in Southcliffe, who’s probably best known stateside for his work in Prometheus.
- Folks that enjoyed the very tense, score-less action sequences from Jack Reacher will be happy to hear that there will be some of that in M:I 5.
- He says he can’t compare the film to anything else he’s seen because, while they were aiming for something in the vein of Ghost Protocol‘s vibe, that “Mission has a life of its own and goes where it wants.”
For McQuarrie and his Mission: Impossible 5 star Tom Cruise this will be, coincidentally, their fifth collaboration together. They worked together, with McQuarrie wearing the hats of writer and/or director, on Valkyrie, Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher, and Edge of Tomorrow. This will definitely be their most high-profile project together, considering how the Mission: Impossible franchise showed how much life it still had in it when Ghost Protocol was a huge hit in 2011 after many thought it was dead following the dismal response to 2006’s Mission: Impossible III.
I, for one, am excited to see what they come up with. I loved the last film that had their two names attached to it (Edge of Tomorrow). Let’s see if they’re able to bring that fresh, inventive energy to Mission: Impossible.
