Michael Fassbender Says ALIEN: COVENANT Is Much Scarier Than PROMETHEUS

The ALIEN franchise hasn’t exactly been branded as the feel-good series of the century. It is a series that had its origins in the sci-fi/horror genres before it quickly moved into the action/sci-fi genre with its sophomore outing, PROMETHEUS. Ever since then, it’s largely stayed squarely within the general science fiction genre, with plenty of action to spare. The closest the series ever got back to its original tone was probably in 2012’s PROMETHEUS, but it still never compared to the original in the horror arena.

In a recent interview with Collider, actor Michael Fassbender (who plays the morally ambiguous android, David) expressed his satisfaction with ALIEN: COVENANT, the direct sequel to PROMETHEUS and prequel to the original ALIEN.

“This ALIEN is going to be… I’m very excited to see it and everybody in the film was saying this is a film that we all want to see. It’s much scarier than PROMETHEUS but it’s got the same sort of scope of PROMETHEUS. It’s kind of got more of the sort of thriller, imminent disaster feel that Alien had, so it’s kind of a beautiful meeting of both of those films. I’m really excited to see it, I think it’s gonna be super scary number one and then again with the massive scope of PROMETHEUS… Once it starts and the ball starts rolling, it doesn’t let up. It’s really gonna bring chills to the cinema.”

So while it doesn’t sound like the film will necessarily be in the same ballpark as the original ALIEN, we can likely expect it to be much closer than we’ve seen the series get before. Considering all we’ve seen from the film thus far, that doesn’t come as surprising. Some of the more tense aspects of the original film came in the closed quarters in which the crew had to combat this terrifying creature, and if the few screenshots we’ve seen are any indication, it looks like we may be getting at least a small taste of that in COVENANT.

Do Fassbender’s comments do anything for you? Are you anxious for the series mosey on closer to its horror roots, or have you enjoyed the tone it’s adopted since then? Do his comments worry you that it isn’t close enough? Let us know your thoughts down below!

ALIEN: COVENANT hits theaters on August 4, 2017.
