Much has been said regarding the imminent age of video game movies that constantly seems to be on the horizon. last year, we were treated to such films as Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed, and despite the promise both movies seemed to have, they didn’t accomplish what they thought they could. Meanwhile, Paramount has been hard at work on their adaptation of the manga Ghost in the Shell. While this has been on our radar for sometime, the prospect of entering an age of anime adaptations seemed to be further out of reach.
However, between the trailers we’ve gotten so far and the marketing, Ghost in the Shell has slowly risen to prominence as a movie to take seriously. We may be closer to an age of anime adaptations than an age of video game adaptations, if you can believe that. While there is still the potential for the movie to be bad, the marketing material paints it as a hard sci-fi, and something of a spiritual successor to smarter movies like Blade Runner and The Matrix. If you somehow needed anything else to convince you of that, Paramount has released a couple new one sheets.
Check them out below:
The first one, as you can see, looks to be ripped right out of the trailers, with Scarlett Johansson’s Major breaking through the glass and firing her gun at some unknown assailants. Of note here is the fact that they underplay the “body suit†aspect of it. No longer does it look like a naked Scarjo running around, but rather a full-on tech suit (while the suit is clearly this in the trailers, they definitely play up the skin tone differently). This is likely done so that they can actually post this in movie theaters without any pushback from more conservative consumers, but it’s plenty cool nonetheless (and to be frank, I actually prefer the look of this one over the body suit).
The second poster comes in the form of the spider-like robo-geisha we saw in the trailers. They’re creepy, and venture well within the realm of the uncanny valley. Definitely makes for an eye-catching poster, and we can see this being a draw for those unfamiliar with the source material. If nothing else, it invites the viewer to question just what in the hell it is.
