Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart Scifi Film EQUALS Gets Touching Trailer

– by Joseph Medina

The science fiction genre is a versatile one. It can be used to explore politics, racism, environmentalism, or almost every subject under the sun. While the stuff that really sells in Hollywood tends to be the escapism type of movies, like STAR WARS (which, let’s be honest, is fantasy), STAR TREK, and EDGE OF TOMORROW, among many others, there doesn’t seem to be any real shortage of the more low key scifi films–the ones on which the genre was founded.

These films are less about predicting the future, and more about making a statement about society. Films EX MACHINA and HER are both great examples of recent films that fall under the category I’m talking about, but they’re by no means the only ones. It’s a well-worn genre, and one that isn’t likely to disappear any time soon.

The latest of these films is one called EQUALS, a picture directed by Drake Doremus that stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult.

Check out the trailer below!

As this is a film that revolves around two beings in love in an otherwise loveless society, the tone of the trailer is fittingly morbid and grim. The visuals are beautiful, all while looking desolate, uniform, and lonely, and above all else, it is able to get a lot across with no words. The shot where Kristen Stewart moves her hand to touch his, only to have him slightly pull away, is especially effective.

Also of note is the write of the film, Nathan Parker. While you may not recognize the name, this is the same man who wrote the great Sam Rockwell pic MOON back in 2009. Let’s hope to get something of similar quality with this one.
