‘Red Sparrow’ Gets A Writer, & Possibly More

Deadline is reporting that Red Sparrow, an adaptation of the book by Jason Matthews, is a hot property on the move. The rights to the film were once being circled by Darren Aronofsky, but now Fox is putting together a team that could help get the book onto the screen in a big way. They’ve hired Eric Warren Singer, hot off his Oscar nomination for American Hustle, to adapt the spy thriller.

But that’s not all.

The site is also reporting that David Fincher and Rooney Mara are also circling the project. The director and actress would be re-teaming for the first time since The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Mara would play the lead, Dominika Egorova, a Russian spy unwillingly ordered to become a “Sparrow,” which is a form of spy trained to use seductive techniques as a form of “sexpionage.” Things take a turn when, while on assignment against a CIA operative, the two of them find themselves- and a network of spies- in danger. Dominika turns on her soulless masters and begins a fatal double life, getting recruited by the CIA to track a traitor in Washington.

Development on the project is in the very early stages, but it’s said that the film is a priority for Fox. They’re prepared to fast-track it, if it means they can land talent on the caliber of Fincher and Mara on the project.
