Image Comics has another sellout on its hands.
The publisher announced that Savage Dragon #281 has completely sold out at the distributor level just days after its release, prompting an immediate second printing to meet growing demand from comic shops and readers. The strong sales continue a recent surge for Erik Larsen’s legendary creator-owned superhero series as it marches toward its historic 300th issue.
According to Image Comics, the issue generated significant reorder activity from retailers, leading the publisher to send the comic back to press almost immediately.
Series creator Erik Larsen credited readers for the renewed momentum surrounding the current storyline.
“Reader response to the latest storyline has been intense,” Larsen said. “We just went back to press on Savage Dragon #280 and now #281 has sold out. It’s been nothing short of incredible.”
Issue #281 continues the story of Malcolm Dragon, who returns home after his time in Russia only to discover that life has continued without him. Forced to confront a world that has changed during his absence, Malcolm must begin rebuilding both his personal life and his place within it.

The sellout follows a similar reprint announcement for Savage Dragon #280, suggesting that the current story arc has reignited interest in one of Image Comics’ longest-running titles.
Since debuting in 1992 alongside the launch of Image Comics, Savage Dragon has carved out a unique place in comic book history. While many long-running superhero series have rotated through multiple writers and artists over the decades, Larsen has remained the sole writer and artist on the title for its entire run.
That achievement has made Savage Dragon the longest-running full-color American comic book series produced continuously by a single writer and artist—a remarkable milestone in an industry where creative teams frequently change.
Over more than three decades, the series has built a reputation for embracing unpredictable storytelling, permanent character growth, and a willingness to take creative risks rarely seen in mainstream superhero comics. Those qualities have helped maintain a loyal readership while distinguishing the title from many of its contemporaries.
Now, with issue #300 rapidly approaching, renewed interest in the series couldn’t come at a better time. Milestone issues often attract both longtime readers and collectors, and the recent sellouts suggest enthusiasm for Larsen’s ongoing saga is stronger than it has been in years.

Image Comics confirmed that the second printing of Savage Dragon #281 will arrive in comic book shops on August 26, giving fans another opportunity to pick up the latest chapter before the series continues its march toward one of the most impressive milestones in independent comics.
For a title that has been published continuously for more than 30 years under the guidance of a single creator, another sellout serves as a reminder that Savage Dragon remains one of Image Comics’ enduring success stories—and one that still has plenty of life left as it closes in on issue #300.
