THE BATMAN: Ben Affleck Is In Full-On “Trying To Get It Right Mode”

Poor Ben Affleck. Clearly the man just wants to sit in the corner and work on his Batman movie in the dark without being pestered, but alas, I suppose you can only expect so much when you have the keys to perhaps the most iconic character in history. People want to know what you’re doing with it and how the process is going.

When last we heard from Affleck, the writer/director/actor tried his best to make it clear that at this point, there is no Batman film. Is it in the works? Yes. But for the time being it exists only in the ethereal sense. As a storyteller, he’s still doing his best to get the story where it needs to be before he starts parading it around in front of the press. But, of course, the press prods.

Speaking with IGN while promoting The Accountant, Affleck gave another update on the status of The Batman.

“Last night I spent (time) working on the script. I’m in full-on ‘trying to get it right mode’. It’s not the kind of movie that you can fail quietly at. You have to really be sure that I have something that I feel really confident about before we go forward.”

Affleck couldn’t be more right. When it comes to something like The Batman, you can’t really make low-key choices. When you have a property like it, you really have to go bold with a unique vision, otherwise what’s the point of using the character to begin with? In true lifestyle fashion, if you aren’t failing, you’re not trying enough new things.

Does this make the prospect of a new Batman film any less sweet? Absolutely not. However, coming from the perspective of a creative, movies are generally bad for a long time before they end up good, and in this integral time in a story’s development, Affleck is doing everything he can to make sure he is allowing himself to potentially fail and make these bold decisions. If he lets the expectations of the press and fans get to him, that just won’t be possible. Fingers crossed that he’s able to do so, because that’s much easier said than done.
