The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens Trailer Comparison
One enterprising fan did a little experiment which is worth checking out. Putting the trailers to both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi side by side, it showed that the trailers have an uncanny syncing which folks may not have noticed. Cue by cue, the trailer runs synchronous with each other in either an eerie, or lazy way.
The description of the video makes clear that The Force Awakens trailer is sped up to fit the time of The Last Jedi trailer, so we’re not looking at a situation where someone at Lucasfilm simply removed the footage from The Force Awakens from Final Cut Pro and added footage from The Last Jedi and called it good. Yet it is a good experiment to show that producers for the new film are cognizant of having the two films relate to each other. George Lucas made of point of trying to make the Prequel Trilogy relate in the same way to the Original Trilogy, stating the two sets of films are poetic in their own way, what happens in one film happens in another, etc.. While I don’t have an issue with that per se, I do think making that poetry so bloody obvious that it just comes off as a ripoff ruins any chance for the film goer to experience something original.
With a film franchise like Star Wars, originality can be a tough order to reach. While people want new Star Wars films, they don’t necessarily want change. Producers have to walk a fine line of allowing the filmmakers to have some creative license to do what they want as well as satisfying all the business needs a major intellectual property like Star Wars entails. And most of the time, business will win out. So it’s not surprising the two trailers have symmetry. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.
So what do you think? Do you notice the two trailers similarities? Do you think this is simply lazy trailer making or something intentional for the new film? Sound off in the comments section below.
