From Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, the new trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming has arrived on YouTube. Adding in a nice mix of new footage along with already established scenes, it showcases Peter Parker as he figures out how to be the best hero he can be.
This trailer gives me mixed feelings. While it’s great seeing Tom Holland stretch his muscle as Peter Parker some more, the tone of the last two trailers has been a bit uneven. This one in particular can’t seem to decide what type of movie it’s trying to promote, a comedy about the struggles of a young kid trying to make his way in an adult world or an action film starring a high school kid.
The part of the trailer I enjoyed the most was the small bit of business with Spider-Man and the bicycle thief. The moment was short but for me struck a chord as being quite faithful to the character I’ve grown up with in the comics. Spider-Man always finds a way to be a smart-ass when dealing with criminals, whether it be with a verbal quip or capturing them in a humorous way.
Again, the tone of the trailer for me feels off. There are some great moments in it, some which add on to footage we’ve already seen. Maybe it was the music choice for the trailer but again, they tried to go for a more light-hearted tone that didn’t sit well with some of the new footage of The Vulture.
Speaking of The Vulture, one new scene shows him surprising Spider-Man by capturing him and flying off. It was nice to see them pay attention to that little detail as The Vulture in the comics was quite adept at stealth while flying. Scenes like this, scenes that show that the filmmakers understand the characters they’re presenting in the story, give me faith that despite this lackluster trailer, we’re going to see a great movie. Also, be on the lookout for what I believe is Donald Glover’s first appearance in a trailer for this movie.
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7th.
