One of the biggest challenges in film making has been filming underwater. There hasn’t been one defining movie or moment that mastered the technique of an underwater scene on CGI or real life. There has been a combination of real life and CGI mixed together (Star Wars: Phantom Menace) that has been so unrealistic it has taken away from the movie.
For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the scene used to introduce Aquaman had Jason Mamoa holding his breath underwater for his up-close shot. This scene was one of the most heavily criticized scenes of the movie sense it was obvious Jason was holding his breath and he is playing a character that can breath underwater.
Over the past 24 hours images have been flooding twitter with Jason Momoa being suspended up in a green screen showing how they plan on filming the underwater scene. Below are some of the images and videos that show the scene.
Last week Zack Snyder gave us a rough cut video of the scene above with Jason Mamoa. It seems that while a good portion of the film is underwater the lens and CG being used makes it seem the audience will view those scenes in a foggy sense. From the images and videos it looks like watching the scene through an aquarium or goggles underwater. I might be able to handle five minutes of watching a film like that but any more than that I will get a headache.
Don’t get me wrong I am super excited about Aquaman especially that Jason Mamoa is playing Arthur Curry. I have a feeling that if the underwater scenes are going to be shown in a realistic underwater sense with a foggy lens it will distract the audience and take away from the film. I guess we will have to wait and find out. Do you all agree or disagree with me? Let us know in the comments section.
