Yesterday an animated Ghostbusters movie was announced by Sony. June 8th, also known as Ghostbusters day (to 12 people), to commemorate the original release date saw a few announcements by Sony. One of which we covered earlier today about the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. We already knew there was a Ghostbusters animated series in the works by Sony. However as of yesterday we also know an animated Ghostbusters movie is coming.
A new animated #Ghostbusters feature is in development with all new characters and a whole new take – helmed by #JenniferKluska and @ChrisPrynoski, and written by #BrendaHsueh. #GhostbustersDay @sonyanimation

It does also seem like Jason Reitmnan is involved as per the comments below.
“This was a passion project of my father’s and it’s easy to understand why. The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless reach of animation.” – @JasonReitman #GhostbustersDay @sonyanimation

An interesting quote given the technical possibilities these days. Maybe, like the old show The Real Ghostbusters, there will be journey’s to the other side etc here? Or, maybe it’s just too expensive to pull off what the vision is on film?
“all new characters and a whole new take”
Though I guess we can expect a new story and new characters based on the comment above? So I don’t expect to see Ray, Peter, Egon or Winston, nor probably any of the Spengler family.

Like the Afterlife sequel in the works, I’m not sure about this. On the whole, I’m rarely a fan of anything Sony does. Afterlife I didn’t hate as much as some, but I also couldn’t understand the love in for it some had. If nothing else maybe this animated movie will take more chances than Afterlife did with telling a new story?
It is currently unknown whether there is any connection between this animated Ghostbusters movie an the already announced animated series. I would guess though, at little to no connection, but that’s just my guess.
