Avengers: Infinity War Writers On How They Would Fix The DC Film Universe

While they have been rivals for decades, DC and Marvel’s cinematic success has proven to be vastly different. While Marvel seems to be able to do no wrong, DC just can’t find their groove. Speaking recently on Kevin Smith’s podcast Fat Man on Batman, Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Steven McFeely were asked how they would fix the DC universe, here’s what they had to say.

Christopher Markus:

“I would look at what Marvel did, out of necessity, in that they didnt have their a list characters, they didnt have Spider-Man, they didnt have the X-Men, and they went down the line and found, I mean he’s pretty f**kin famous as Iron Man, but he’s, you know, he wasn’t there, and they made a really good movie out of it. I might put Batman and Superman and everybody else, I mean, Wonder Woman is doing fine, aside for a second and go through the vast world and go ‘that guy, or that girl’ and go ‘lets just make a really good movie and not a universe and see what happens. You know, there’s a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall.

Steven McFeely:

“My familiarity with the DC universe is not that great, so I mean I can just go sort of strategically, it’s make one [film] right. To quote Justice League, ‘Save one person.'”

Personally, this is similar to what I have always felt one of the bigger problems was with DC’s shared universe, they rushed it. Marvel set out with their plan and performed it with near flawless execution. DC, also wanting to cash in made a dash to get their character’s films out, and I think that was a mistake. The reason the first Avengers paid off so well was the build up, we had seen these characters individually for years prior, and finally seeing them all together was very rewarding for fans who were patient. Marvel’s universe was built over time, DC’s was thrown together in a relatively clumsy manner.
