UPDATE – Batwoman: Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane Will NOT Be Killed Off

UPDATE: Contrary to our previous report, Batwoman character Kate Kane will NOT be killed off. Showrunner Caroline Dries made a statement to THR on the matter.

“As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I’m well aware of the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope and I have no interest in participating in it,” Dries said. “That’s why it’s important to me as the showrunner to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and recasting Batwoman. Like you, I love Kate Kane — she’s the reason I wanted to do the show. We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Batwoman to be killed off?

It was pretty surprising when we learned that Ruby Rose would be exiting Batwoman. Of course, she’s not the first CW actor to leave her series. Throughout the history of the Arrowverse, there has been plenty of actors cycle in and out for one reason or another. But we haven’t had an instance of a main character — the titular one, no less — leaving their main series. As such, the departure of Ruby Rose leaves us with a lot of questions.

We’ve already had a couple of those questions answered. We know that the Batwoman mantle will be taken up by Ryan Wilder. She will be more of a rookie bumbling version of the character and will have been inspired by Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane. But what hasn’t been answered yet is how Kate Kane will be written off. Will she simply disappear or will it be a more permanent elimination?

If we’re to believe a new rumor from Daniel Richtman, it’ll actually be the latter. The scooper stated in a new report that Kate Kane will “die in the second season of Batwoman.” Sadly, details are nonexistent as to how the killing will be done. Additionally, with Ruby Rose not returning for the second season, will they have to resort to some awkward, off-screen death? I certainly hope so, as I think it would be cool of Rose to return to at least close out the character’s journey.

I’m actually shocked by this report — which I believe. Richtman has a great track record, and this does seem like the type of scoop that’s easy to get right. But I am surprised that the CW would go the “killing off” route. After all, they tend to keep a lot of characters around so they can cycle them in when needed. The fact that they’re killing them off seems to prove that they have no intention of ever working with Ruby Rose again.

That being said, I suppose we are working with multiverses here. If things changed, It wouldn’t be that hard for them to open up another Earth and pluck out another Kate Kane. Still, I do think they’re making something of a statement by killing her off. It may not be at the same level as when South Park killed off Chef, but it does feel a bit extreme.
