Birds Of Prey Budget Is $75 Million, Lowest Budget In The DCEU Yet

Big blockbusters these days tend to hover around $150 million or so. At least. I mean, even Ant-Man and the Wasp had a budget north of that. With so many superheroes flying around, it’s super rare that you get anything below $100 million, let alone $130 million. And yet, there are some productions that manage it. Deadpool did so a few years back, and this year’s Shazam! even managed to come it right around $100 million exactly.

Studios are wising up to the idea that not everything needs to be a balls-to-the-wall CG-fest. They just need to create films that embrace the nature of their characters, and they’re all set. It worked with Shazam!, and it looks like they’re leaning on that approach for the upcoming Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

An extensive profile on one of the film’s stars and producers, Margot Robbie, it was revealed that the budget for the film clocked in at $75 million. It’s the highest budget to date for Robbie’s production banner LuckyChap, but the lowest to date for the DC Extended Universe.

Thus far, we know that this film will be a lot goofier than the early DCEU stuff, and we also know it will be full of women, including characters like Huntress and Black Canary. But now, based on this, I’m expecting the spectacle to feel a lot more grounded and limited in scope, which is by no means a bad thing.

If nothing else, it means they can take real risks in terms of the story and tone, and given how far along in this age of superhero movies, I’m all for changing it up.
