My Friend Hated Superman – Here’s His Review

Hey folks, so one of my (Cam) friends just watched and hated Superman now its on digital, here’s his rather scathing review. First, I’ll simply say, although I enjoyed this rant, I fundamentally disagree with his opinion, which is not uncommon between us when it comes to movies. You can therefore, catch my own, fairly positive Superman review in the related section below.

I’ll also add that Superman is, he claims, his favourite superhero character.

I’ll add a few comments here and there.

Mark’s Superman Review

****

James Gunn’s new Superman movie turned out to be an excellent Green Lantern flick. Nathan Fillion completely nailed Guy Gardner’s chaotic, loudmouth energy — it’s just a shame Superman wandered into it.

[ED: Really?]

David Corenswet gave a performance that evoked strong memories of Jim Varney. Not just in appearance, but in the sense that his Superman was about as effective as Ernest P. Worrell trying to file his taxes.

Sadly, the decay of Trump’s America seems to have trickled down to Metropolis. Superman’s parochial adoptive parents served absolutely no story purpose, while Clark himself spent most of the film looking confused by the world he supposedly grew up in and swore to love.

[ED: The Parents did serve a purpose, but… we didn’t spend enough time with them to care.]

The journalists? Don’t worry about them. The “mystery” drops right into their laps without effort, mostly thanks to Lex Luthor’s girlfriend — who, for reasons never explained, is Jimmy Olsen’s stalker.

[ED: Surprisingly fair and accurate actually]

It was certainly a bold move to reimagine Superman as a National Lampoon comedy where the dog is more competent than the hero. In one scene, we went straight from slapstick stupidity to a man being executed by gunshot to the head. That tonal whiplash deserves its own Oscar.

Highlights included Superman weeping to Lois about his dog while other heroes were literally dying in the street outside his window. PETA will also be thrilled to know that while a dinosaur the size of a city block was smashing cars (with people still in them), Superman was busy saving… a squirrel.

[ED: Other heroes were not literally dying outside, Clark had been there and established they didn’t need him. Oh and I liked the squirrel scene – over exaggeration]

The music was another bold choice. After John Williams and Hans Zimmer gave us two of the most iconic themes in cinema history, James Gunn apparently hit “shuffle” on his iTunes. The result: utterly forgettable.

[ED: They did use Williams theme, but… not enough and overall I agree the score was weak.]

If you white-knuckled it to the end of this cinematic endurance test, I salute your bravery. Thankfully Gunn’s reputation will pack enough people into cinemas so this doesn’t instantly kill the franchise.

All kidding aside — if you want to watch a heartfelt movie about a man and his dog, just put on Turner & Hooch.
