Cary Joji Fukunaga Expresses Excitement On Directing Bond 25
With the exit of Danny Boyle over creative differences, Bond 25 (temporary title) producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have chosen a new director for the film in Cary Joji Fukunaga. It’s a decision we’ve known for some time now, but it’s been a while since we’ve had any real update.
For those who don’t know, Fukunaga will be the first Asian-American filmmaker to direct a 007 film; his father is Japanese-American. His previous works include the entire first season of True Detective, Netflix’s Beasts Of No Nation and limited series Maniac, as well as Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre. Born and raised in Northern California, Fukunaga sat down with Inquirer.net about the first Bond film he ever saw:
“The first Bond I ever saw was AViewToAKill with Roger Moore. The whole finale took place in the Bay Area, which is where I’m from. So to see my home on the big screen was really exciting. It made your own life seem larger than itself… To me, Duran Duran’s Bond theme song (titled the same as the movie) was probably one of the best Bond songs ever, because I love Duran Duran.”

Fukunaga also expressed his excitement over working with the current Agent 007, Daniel Craig:
“Daniel is an incredible actor. Outside of Bond, I have been a fan for years of his work. For me, he was the best part of Road To Perdition. In his first Bond movie, Casino Royale, he brought an incredible amount of vulnerability and humanity to the character, which was a big shift from Pierce Brosnan’s run… In terms of what I can bring to change the character, Bond is on a character arc that started with Casino Royale, and I will be carrying that on. There will be changes, I am sure. As in any story, a character has to change in order [to have] a narrative.”
Fukunaga and his team are currently working on the screenplay.
“A little bit, but not all yet. I am trying to get the narrative stuff sorted out and have a good story to tell… Yeah, there will be the things in the Bond-verse that you have come to expect. I can’t say too much, though.”
Bond 25 is currently slated for a February 2020 release.
