This coming July, Netflix audiences will be introduced to the world of Castlevania. Of course, being based on the video game of the same name, gamers have already been living in this world for decades. However, whereas the games have largely been focused on gameplay, music, and aesthetics, the new series will finally bring story to the forefront — a story that’s often just served as a backdrop and haphazard justification for the action.
But don’t think that just because the focus has switched away from gameplay that they have their priorities in all the wrong places. Executive producer Adi Shankar has been pretty adamant that Castlevania will end up as the best video game adaptation up to this point (admittedly, it’s not an incredibly high bar). That may mean very little, but Shankar has always come across as a real fanboy, and based on that initial teaser starting off with a man blowing into an NES cartridge, one gets the impression that they’re looking to pay homage to the source material whenever possible.

If you need further proof, have a gander at the latest poster, shared by Shankar himself.
Of course, some fitting changes have been made. The Belmont in question no longer resembles an off-brand Conan the Barbarian, and Dracula no longer resembles the cartoonish caricature we knew him as growing up, and add in the new, more realistic art style and color scheme, and you have a perfect, updated poster.
The official synopsis to the series is as follows:
“Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.”
