“Mission Accepted”, these are the words found on director Christopher McQuarrie’s Twitter page referring to his return to Paramount’s Mission Impossible franchise and why wouldn’t he? McQuarrie first took on the iconic Ethan Hunt character, played by Tom Cruise, in 2015’s Mission: Impossible Rouge Nation, the fifth film in the franchise that grossed $682 million worldwide. He then came back for the next film, Mission: Impossible Fallout which brought in $791 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing film in the franchise. Not only has Fallout brought in the cash but it was also very well received by critics, Rotten Tomatoes has it as Certified Fresh with a 97% and it recently even won a Critics Choice Award.
With those results, McQuarrie had been highly sought after by Warner Bros. to helm a DC project film as well as other studios. But it looks like he will be taking on not one but two back to back Mission: Impossible films for Paramount as a writer and director. Variety is reporting that the films would be shot back to back in order to take advantage of the popularity of the series with the first one being released in 2021 and the second in summer of 2022.
Tom Cruise has also confirmed his return to the franchise as the mentioned agent Ethan Hunt on Twitter, check it out below along with McQuarrie’s tweet.

McQuarrie is the first director to helm multiple installments of Mission: Impossible, after years of Paramount switching it up to give each film a different vibe. But it would seem that the studios as well as Cruise have settled on the fact that McQuarrie is the best man for the job. Now his task it two write the two films, all while Cruise shoots Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick. McQuarrie is repped by CAA and Ken Kamins and Cruise is repped by CAA.
