Long before Microsoft and Sony had their own video game rivalry, the two originals, Nintendo and Sega had a heavy-duty competition of their own. Based on a novel of the same name by Blake J. Harris, a documentary titled Console Wars chronicles the first battle for the video game market.

I was in elementary school when these ‘wars’ began. I was a Nintendo kid, always. In fact, I remember the day my parents were to buy me an NES. After a couple hours at school, I tried to fake being sick, and call my mom. She said if I was sick I could come home, but I wouldn’t be allowed to play the Nintendo. I made a miraculous recovery and endured the rest of the day at school, which those next sever hours seemed like 14, at least.
I don’t remember many, if any kids at my school having a Sega, it was all Nintendo. Sure, Sega had the 16-bit compared to Nintendo’s 8-bit machine, but at such a young age, that wasn’t a huge factor.
As I got older I remember a few here and there, but it was definitely Mario over Sonic in the area of central California where I grew up. This is definitely something I will be watching. Oh, the memories it is sure to bring back. Playing for hours on end, the morning discussions on the playground, good times, good times.
Console Wars debuts on CBSAllAccess September 23.
If this seems like it’s something you might enjoy, I recommend checking out The King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters.
You can find an official synopsis down below.
“An Official Selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, Console Wars takes viewers back to 1990 when Sega, a fledgling arcade company, assembled a team of misfits to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and uniquely American capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation.”
