When Top Gun: Maverick was announced it sent the film world past the red line into overload. In recent months, there has been continued information revealing the who will be flying high in the sequel to the 1986 film. Today there have been reports that Jennifer Connelly (Labyrinth and The Rocketeer) is in talks to play a lead role in the film. This is in addition to the news that Miles Teller (Footloose and Fantastic Four) has landed the role of Goose’s son. There is no news on what role Connelly will play though adding her cements the talented roster for the 2019 release.
In the past, Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Justin Marks mentioned that Kelly McGillis would not be coming back to the franchise leaving a love interest spot for Tom Cruise’s Maverick open. Marks also mentioned that there will be an age-appropriate femme fatale sharing the stage with Cruise. Could Connelly be in line for this opening on the film since reports have not been public about other female stars in talks with the film? Or could Connelly be playing a new pilot representing the shift of equality since the 80s?
What the decision ends up being this film is getting the green light for take off as the film targets its July 12, 2019 release date. Kenny Loggins has previously mentioned that he will be re-recording some of the films famous songs which propelled the original to become such a hit. There will be more information as the film gets closer to its release date but it seems this film will be a good followup to the first film.
