The Lanterns creators and star Kyle Chandler discuss Sinestro and how he is used as the Hannibal Lecter of the series. EW recently spoke to the Lanterns team and it’s so weird they likened Sinestro to Lecter as I did the same in my review of the latest episode just yesterday.
I think I said something like it reminded me of Hannibal Lecter to Hal Jordan’s Clarice when Sinetsro was shown in prison for previous crimes. Then I read this piece from EW. Anyway, lets get to what the talent had to say.
“We didn’t really go into great detail with each other, but we did it by running it and running it and finding new things,” Chandler tells Entertainment Weekly of working with actor Ulrich Thomsen on that scene, which continues later on the show. “The more and more that we did it, I found myself feeling more of a respect in that mentor-student thing because he gave me what I have, like him or not. There was almost like a father figure sitting in front of me.”

“As big of a trope as it is to go visit Hannibal Lecter in the prison or Loki, this is tried and true,” Damon Lindelof, an executive producer alongside Tom King and showrunner Chris Mundy, says to EW. “The idea that Sinestro is out there is really, really important to understanding who Hal is. No one is gonna be able to poke at Hal’s reluctance to cede the ring more than Sinestro will.”
“We wanted him in the show just because of his place in the mythology,” showrunner Chris Mundy explains of Sinestro. “But by nature of the fact that we were telling a mystery more than we were telling a thriller, we don’t really have a big bad in the season. We have mysteries [where] there might be something malevolent behind them or not, and there’s a mystery of people’s identities or who did what, but it’s not ‘we’re fighting this bad guy, and he’s gonna destroy the world.’ So in this weird way, it freed us up. We could use him sparingly.”
As per my review, see above, I thought the dynamic worked really well and I am keen to see this developed further in the series. I guess we will see how this progresses not just in Season 1, but in future seasons to come.
