Dave Bautista Has No Interest In Being A Big Star

Bautista probably gained the most recognition with his turn as Drax The Destroyer. The gray-skinned bruiser with a heart made his debut in Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy back in 2014. Since then Bautista has shown audiences his uncanny ability to slip into a role. Watching Bautista act is certainly a departure from his wrestling persona. When he plays Drax, I don’t think, “Wow there’s Dave Bautista on the big screen.” Instead, he elevates roles giving more character and nuance than you might expect from a former pro wrestler.

It is not hard to imagine Dave Bautista signing on for the role in a period drama set in Kansas. He did kind of already do that as Sapper Morton in Dennis Villeneuve sequel to Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049. The 50-year-old actor has recently signed on to play Beast Rabban in Villeneuve’s Dune remake. On his choice of roles, Bautista comments:

“I want good roles. I don’t care about Fast and Furious or Bumblebee. … That’s not the kind of stardom I want. … I want to be in Dune. I want to work with Denis Villeneuve. I want to work with Sam Mendes and Jodie Foster. I want to work with Academy Award winners. I’m proud to be a character actor. I want that respect and credibility and education.”

When discussing fellow WWE alumni turned actor The Rock, Bautista says:

“Rock was, in a way, a movie star before he was even a movie star. There is something about him that’s really special. I’d never take that away from him.”

In addition to a return as Drax in April’s Avengers: Endgame. Bautista also has roles in Stuber alongside Kumail Nanjiani which releases in July, and the August release, My Spy.
