Disney Makes Its First Big Signing Since Fox Deal With Drew Goddard

With Disney taking control of Fox this week they haven’t wasted in time in getting the ball rolling on some TV projects. Disney has signed Drew Goddard up on a huge deal to develop TV projects for 20th Century Fox TV, now of course owned by the House of Mouse.

According to THR, Goddard has signed a four year, eight-figure salary deal to develop TV shows for the new corporate giant. The deal is effective immediately and new Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment chairman Dana Walden said Thursday in a statement.

“We have wanted to be in business with Drew since the day his work on our series Angel was over. That was in 2004, “Having a new deal with him after all this time makes me unspeakably happy. As a writer and director, he’s a 10; as a collaborator and magnet for other incredible writers, directors and actors, he is off the charts. Our goal is to support Drew as he builds his own spectacular production company inside of the Disney Television Studios.”

Goddard was recently the initial driving force behind Marvel and Netflix’s The Defenders universe and was showrunner for Season 1 of Daredevil. Though still involved to the end, he did hand off duties to Steven S. DeKnight as he moved on to develop a Sinister Six spin-off for Sony, a project which is still apparently being developed.

Goddard began his career working on both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel with Joss Whedon, and he most recently wrote and directed the film Bad Times at the El Royale. For me, Goddard is a very consistent writer and I look forward to seeing what he dreams up for Disney. I will also guess whatever he works on will be more mature content for the Fox brand as opposed to the family-friendly Disney brand, but that is just a guess.

Fans will no doubt be thinking Disney has signed Goddard up to bring The Defenders characters over from Netflix onto either Disney + or Hulu. Though, whilst this is possible eventually, we must remember that Disney is unable to move ahead with any of these characters again until at least 2021 due to a Netflix Exclusivity deal.
