Disney+ To Feature A ‘What If’ Animated Series Based On The MCU

As a comic book fan it’s always a good time to get together with friends and explore the world of “what if” our favorite characters would have taken a different path or made a different decision. Well back in 1977 Marvel launched a series titled What If that has accumulated almost 200 issues in it’s nine volume run. This series offered impossible scenarios that sometimes were just a lot of fun and other times were really weird. For example, What if the X-Men died in their first mission? What if Thanos joined the Avengers? and What if Wolverine had Killed the Hulk?

As interesting as these stories may be in comic books, wouldn’t they be even more entertaining in a television series? Slashfilm has reported that Marvel Studios will be producing a new animated television series based on the popular What If comic book series for the Disney+ streaming service. The series will be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. but the stories will not be cannon in the MCU.

Just like in the comic books, the animated series will look into how the MCU could have developed if key moments in it’s history had not occurred as they are likely recognized in the current story line. One example that is given is the adaption of What If? Vol. 1 #47 What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor? They hope to be able to have some of the actors of the live action MCU films reprise their roles in the animated series, that will look into the alternate possibilities from another dimension. The series would function like an anthology, where each episode would take on a different premise.

It will be interesting to see what scenarios from the MCU they will pick out. Thinking about how many films they have released since Iron Man there is so much material they can pull from. Overall it looks like a really entertaining series. What MCU scenarios would you like to see changed? Let us know in the comment section below!
