For six seasons, Game of Thrones has slowly built towards an unprecedented clash of kings and queens. Sadly, fans of the books had long assumed that we would be seeing the culmination pay off in the actual novels, but given how busy author George R.R. Martin is, it’s understandable that he hasn’t been able to finish them in the timeframe he had originally hoped. Regardless, at this point, things have diverged quite a bit, and even if the general idea of the events are the same, the overall execution will be as such that it won’t really matter that we’ve seen them twice.
If this trailer is any indication, however, this first look at the culmination will be quite the memorable one indeed. In the footage, Cersei Lannister finds herself surrounded on all fronts by enemies of her own making. After tens of episodes of seeing things slowly build to this point, Season 7 will finally see the payoffs start to roll in.

We then check in with many of the other characters from various points in this world. Daenerys is ready to invade with her army, and yet others seem much less resolved — especially the eternally-mopey Jon Snow. Yet while the battle for the Iron Throne continues, the threat to the North still looms large. Will the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms be able to put their differences aside to address the real threat? That remains to be seen.
Regardless, as showrunner David Benioff said to EW earlier this week, the war is here.
“For a long time we’ve been talking about ‘the wars to come.’ Well, that war is pretty much here. So it’s really about trying to find a way to make the storytelling work without feeling like we’re rushing it — you still want to give characters their due, and pretty much all the characters that are now left are all important characters. Even the ones who might have started out as relatively minor characters have become significant in their own right.”
