UPDATED: Ghost Rider And Helstrom Live-Action Shows Heading To Hulu

UPDATE: Contrary to the initial report, it looks like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Gabriel Luna will be reprising his role as Robbie Reyes in the Ghost Rider series, per Variety.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Those Marvel fans who have been wondering if Marvel Entertainment would ever return to more R-rated properties following the cancelation of the Defenders shows may finally have an answer to their question — and the answer is pretty much the obvious one many of us have been pointing in the months following the cancelation of said Netflix shows.

According to TheWrap, Hulu has ordered a couple of new Marvel shows. The first is Marvel’s Ghost Rider. This show will feature Robbie Reyes’ as the Spirit of Vengeance, but those who are expecting this to be a continuation of what we saw in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back on ABC will be sorely disappointed, as it will be a completely different take on the character. Ingrid Escajeda will be executive producing and showrunning. Paul Zbyszewski and Jeph Loeb will be executive producing as well.

“Per Hulu, Reyes is a quintessential antihero, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.”

The second series we’ll be getting is Marvel’s Helstrom, which is based on the comic Hellstrom (two Ls on the second one), which follows the Son of Satan, Daimon Hellstrom (should I say Hellstrom or Helstrom one more time?). Zbyszewski will also be executive producing this, and will also serve as showrunner, with Loeb executive producing as well.

“In Hulu’s version, Daimon and Ana (who goes by Satana in the comic) Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity — each with their attitude and skills. “Marvel’s Helstrom” is also executive produced by Zbyszewski — who will serve as showrunner — and Loeb.”

This new deal comes on the heels of a quartet of adult animated series coming to the streaming service, and will be yet another couple of live-action shows to join Runaways. Clearly, if the Defenders were ever coming back, Hulu is where they’d be (though don’t expect that for at least another year and a half).
