Of course, few could predict the twist that the film would have. Yes, Shyamalan is well known for the twists he brings to his movies, but after 15-plus years of waiting, no one expected Split to be a backdoor sequel to Unbreakable, one of Shyamalan’s most beloved films from his early days.
With Split coming out as an unquestionable success, we knew a sequel would be on the way. For months, Shyamalan teased audiences on his Twitter account with insights into his writing of the screenplay for the sequel. Not long after, it was revealed that the latest entry in the saga would be titled Glass.

Now, Shyamalan has once again taken to Twitter to tease his writing even further!
Finished the 2nd draft of #Glass on Friday. Took 5 weeks. Started the 3rd pass today… gave myself a 3 week deadline for this pass.

So not only is he done with the second draft, but he’s already started the third one. It’s unclear just how many drafts he plans on doing before he can consider it complete, but based on his rate, I’d say five or six drafts sounds about right. Likely, in less than two months, we’ll have a shootable draft — one they can start the pre-production process with.
That being said, the film is set to hit theaters on January 18, 2019, so that would leave an awful lot of dead space in between a finished script and production (which is likely around January of next year). Perhaps once he’s done with his six or so drafts, the studio will come in, give their input, and then send him off once again for a few more months. If we assume that is the case, that will still give them a few extra months for pre-production, before starting filming in January of 2018.
All in all, it sounds like a solid timeframe. It’s fast, but it seems to have a decent amount of room to ensure that the script ends up being good enough to live up to the quality of Unbreakable and Split.
The official synopsis for Glass is below:
“M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s UNBREAKABLE and last year’s SPLIT—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: GLASS. From UNBREAKABLE, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from SPLIT are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.
“Following the conclusion of SPLIT, GLASS finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.”
