Godzilla Fights His Way To $6.3M In Thursday Ticket Sales

Critics haven’t been all too keen on the newly-released Godzilla: King of the Monsters. As of this writing, the Rotten Tomatoes score is sitting squarely at 42% — so less than half of the critics who have seen the movie would recommend it to audiences. Although based on what I’ve heard about the movie, I had an inkling it’d be one of those movies with a real critic-fan divide, and it looks like I may be right, if the 90% Verified Audience Rating on the same site is anything to go by.

However, if that audience rating isn’t enough, it looks like we have some box office numbers to go off of as well. While it doesn’t necessarily give us an indication of fan reactions, it at least shows us the overall interest of the film going into this first weekend.

According to THR, Godzilla: King of the Monsters has taken in a respectable $6.3 million in its Thursday preview numbers. For comparison, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island took in $3.7 million, and that one went on to make a respectable $566.7 million worldwide. The film didn’t beat 2014’s Godzilla‘s numbers, however, which came in at $9.3 million at the time. With that in mind, I think an opening in the realm of $65 to $70 million is a possibility for the sequel.

But what can’t be understated is the importance of overseas audiences. While 2014’s Godzilla outperformed Kong domestically, Kong‘s overseas numbers helped push it past its predecessor. Given the hot Kaiju-on-Kaiju action going on here in King of the Monsters (which is a step up from what both the other films offer), I think we may be in another overseas hit, in addition to a respectable North American run.
