For the Godzilla vs Kong, director Adam Wingard put together an ask me anything on Reddit recently to answer any questions and fill in any plot holes fans have had. When Mechagodzilla was activated before the final battle, Ren Serizawa, played by Shun Oguri, could no longer control him. One Redditor wanted to know who was the one doing the controlling.
I think it’s the ghost of Ghidorah possessing Mecha’s A.I. creating a new personality.
So there you have it. Wingard cleared that part of the movie for anyone wondering. At the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Alan Jonah, played by Charles Dance, was buying the severed head of King Ghidorah. Unfortunately, Jonah wasn’t seen in Godzilla vs Kong so some may have been able to connect the dots, but it’s always good to get the answers that were not shown on screen.

More from the AMA
There were some great questions answered on this AMA and I wanted to share some of them. One Redditor wanted to know if there was a reason why the Serizawa connection (between Ishiro and Ren) wasn’t explicit in this movie.
Just didn’t have the time in the plot to get more into it. Felt interesting leaving it mysterious. I hear the novelization expands on that, I need to check it out. I hear it has a lot of scenes that were never even in the script. Should be cool to see that take, also I hope it expands on the monsters inner thoughts.
Another Redditor wanted to know if Wingard or the studio decided who would win, Kong or Godzilla.
Luckily they agreed with me right from the start so that was never a problem. Good to be on the same page about something like that!
This last Redditor had a question that led to a funny answer. They wanted to know how did the team characterize Godzilla, Kong, and Mechagodzilla.
To summerize: Godzilla is all attitude. Kong is “too old for this shit” and Mechagodzilla is a d**k.
