HBO is revisiting one of the most controversial criminal cases of the 1990s with a new limited series centered on the trial of Louise Woodward.
The premium cable network has officially ordered The Trial of Louise Woodward, a five-episode limited series starring two-time Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus, Sirens). The drama will be directed in its entirety by Academy Award and Emmy-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier, with production scheduled to begin this August ahead of an expected 2027 premiere.
Based on the real-life case that captivated audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, the series will chronicle the 1997 trial of 18-year-old British au pair Louise Woodward, who was accused of fatally shaking an infant while working for an American family in Massachusetts. The highly publicized courtroom battle became an international media sensation, fueling debates about childcare, class, justice, and the growing influence of round-the-clock news coverage.
Fahy will lead the project as Woodward, marking another collaboration with HBO following her acclaimed performances in The White Lotus and Sirens. Her casting reunites the actress with the network after a string of standout roles that have established her as one of television’s fastest-rising stars.
Behind the camera, the series brings together an accomplished creative team. Matthew Barry (Industry, The Guest) will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while Susanne Bier will direct all five episodes in addition to executive producing. Big Light Productions founder Frank Spotnitz also joins the project as an executive producer alongside Emily Feller, Tobi de Graaff, and Antoine Douaihy.

HBO executive Francesca Orsi praised the collaboration in announcing the series.

Barry emphasized that the story’s relevance has only grown in the decades since the original trial.

The Louise Woodward case remains one of the most closely watched legal proceedings of the late 20th century. In 1997, Woodward was convicted in the death of eight-month-old Matthew Eappen after prosecutors argued she had violently shaken the child. The verdict sparked intense public debate in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The case took another dramatic turn when the trial judge reduced her conviction from second-degree murder to involuntary manslaughter and sentenced her to time already served, allowing her to return to England.
The legal proceedings became a cultural flashpoint, raising questions about medical evidence, media influence, and differing perceptions of justice between the two countries.
HBO has built a strong reputation for prestige dramas based on real events, with series such as Chernobyl and The Staircase earning critical acclaim for their nuanced portrayals of complex stories. With Fahy leading the cast and Bier directing every episode, The Trial of Louise Woodward appears poised to continue that tradition.
Production is expected to begin later this month, with the five-episode limited series currently targeting a 2027 release on HBO.
