Hobbs & Shaw: The Rock Says Film Will Be First To Showcase Samoan Culture | CinemaCon 2019
For years, Hollywood has been making slow and steady progress in embracing other cultures on the big screen. For decades, many of our heroes on the big screen only reflected a certain chunk of the American demographic, and as we become more diverse, it’s been nice to see changes to the big screen being change to reflect that. We’ve had films like Black Panther, Coco, and Captain Marvel hit it big, and of course, there’s another big movie on the horizon that fits the bill nicely.
I’m talking about Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Of course, this movie stars co-leads Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, and “for the first time ever in blockbuster tentpole movie,” Johnson said while introducing the new trailer for the action flick, “we’re very proud to showcase our two culture — the culture of England and the culture of Samoa. It’s the first time you’ve seen Samoa ever featured and ever showcased in a movie.”

. @TheRock just introduced a new trailer for Hobbs & Shaw and #CinemaCon. It’s action-packed, funny, and full of the cultural energy they talk about here. It’s all insane, has Roman Reigns, and the wildest stunt I’ve ever seen.
Plus, they called Idris Elba “Black Superman. pic.twitter.com/Q12Gp8iXAm

Sadly, we don’t get to feast our eyes on the new trailer, but it’s very clear Johnson is passionate about the work they’ve done on the film (that being said, the dude is never NOT passionate). Personally, I’m happy to see another culture get showcased in a big movie like this. Like many other Americans, my knowledge of Samoan culture, and while Hobbs & Shaw shouldn’t be the end-all interpretation of how it should be portrayed on screen, it could be the first introduction that leads to overall greater exposure to other moviegoers.
What do you think of Johnson’s speech? How much did you love Jason Statham acting exactly as you’d expect Jason Statham to act on stage? Let us know down below!
