One of Hollywood’s greatest talents whose career spanned over seventy years has died.
Max Von Sydow, known for his career-defining performances in The Exorcist, Pelle The Conqueror, and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, passed away at the age of 90. His family delivered the news Monday “with a broken heart and infinite sadness.” Von Sydow died Sunday evening.
Von Sydow’s career began in Sweden, working with legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman on 11 films, including The Seventh Seal. Passing up on the role of Captain von Trapp in The Sound Of Music, Von Sydow’s Hollywood career started in 1965. In The Greatest Story Ever Told, von Sydow embodied Jesus Christ. From there, his star only grew in the business.

Von Sydow fought the devil as Father Lankester Merrin in the horror classic The Exorcist, battled James Bond as Ernst Blofeld in Never Say Never Again, and delved into thrillers like Three Days Of The Condor and Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Additionally, he ventured into the world of sci-fi, taking roles in Flash Gordon, Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
In 2007, the Los Angeles Times wrote the following about the acclaimed actor:
“Von Sydow is an inherently imposing screen presence with distinctive chiselled features. But in person, he is a warm, unpretentious man profoundly grateful for a career that he himself refuses to consider remarkable.”
But a remarkable career it was. The world lost a memorable figure in the film industry. A stand-out voice intertwined with a unique talent that stood above others in his profession. His legacy is more than worthy of being used as the bar for future thespians to reach.
If you haven’t yet, honor this great artist by adding his films to your queue as soon as possible.
