Iron Fist Season 2 Showrunner On Whether Or Not They Actively Looked To Fix Season 1 Criticisms | SDCC 2018

I’ll admit at this point that the honeymoon period for a lot of these Marvel TV shows is kind of over. Sure, there’s still a lot to like in recent seasons of TV, but some of the problems started to make themselves glaringly obvious with shows like Iron Fist Season 1. From characterizations to plots, pacing, and fighting, there was no shortage of issues that fans had with the final season leading up to The Defenders.

As of right now, it’s looked at as the weakest season of television of the whole of the Marvel/Netflix brand. While the character of Danny Rand has started on his road to redemption with his appearance in the recent Luke Cage, there are many who still doubt it will be a good show. With Season 2, Iron Fist got a new showrunner in the form of Raven Metzner, but are they actively taking steps to fix the problems of that first season?

I had a chance to sit at a roundtable with Metzner, and when I asked that question, he said:

“I come from a slightly different place, I wasn’t there for Season 1. I am new to the marvel family. I come from a nerd-centric world where I read a whole lot of comic books and I love the character. So what I got really excited about was the opportunity when I sat down with Marvel for the first time and heard that this job was available was to tell the iron fist story that I wanted to tell. You know? And of course we leapt off, from… and also in between Season 1 there’s The Defenders, right? And then also now there’s Luke Cage. I had the opportunity to tell the story I always wanted to tell. And yeah, we leapt off from the place where that, where defenders ended, so it was really was a chance for me to do something I’ve wanted to do since I was twelve. It’s and evolution from Season 1.

I think, again I don’t like to compare things, I mean I think that in Season 2 we took a holistic approach to a season of television which had a real feel, we really wanted it to feel, to be on the streets of New York. In that way the world of the show is different and that’s a big scene change. Comparatively, because we’re not in the Rand Corp, we’re out on the streets of New York. We brought a really talented DP Neils Alpert, fantastic. It’s all about the, the cool thing about this medium is the collaboration the through line through. Our DP learned a lot about action form our stunt coordinator and vice versa and working with the actors and their relationship with department heads.”

So there you have it. So it’s not as though Metzner actively looked to improve anything, but he instead started off from his own perspective without really looking at what made that first one tick or fail. Ultimately, I think this is the right decision. In addressing fan concerns, you’re likely to go down a rabbit hole that will ultimately please no one, but in getting someone new like Metzner and letting him do his own thing, you’re already taking the necessary step in setting Season 2 off in its new direction.
