James Wan Talks About Aquaman Spinoff The Trench

When DC and Warner Bros. FINALLY (with the DCEU) hit the $1 billion mark with Aquaman we knew we’d be getting a sequel. What we didn’t expect was a spinoff film about the fish monsters from the film, but that was actually announced before a sequel was. The Trench, as the spinoff will be called, is set to tell a story at some point about these monsters. I say “some story” as there is next to nothing known about the project.

There were early comments that the film would have a horror twist to it, but James Wan, who directed Aquaman, gave an update on the script and tone of the film. He spoke with ComicBook.com recently and had this to say:

“We, you know, we’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much, but definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.”

Wan is most famous for his horror films including having created the Saw franchise and The Conjuring universe which spawned countless sequels and prequels. It’ll be interesting to see how much comic book-ness finds its way into The Trench or if it’ll just feel like a scary movie in its own world.
