Jason Momoa to Join Villeneuve’s Dune Remake

Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Academy Award-nominated director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune project continues to attract talent like hipsters to Burning Man. Legendary, the production company behind Dune is in negotiations with Aquaman star Jason Momoa to join the cast. He will be joining a cast that reads like a fanboys fantasy draft: Avengers: Endgame’s Josh Brolin, Avengers: Infinity War’s Dave Bautista, Interstellar’s Timothée Chalamet, Mission: Impossible – Fallout’s Rebecca Ferguson, Avengers’ Stellan Skarsgård, Melancholia’s Charlotte Rampling, and No Country For Old Men’s Javier Bardem.

Aquaman’s Jason Momoa is in negotiations to play Duncan Idaho. According to the Frank Herbert book the story’s based on, “Idaho was a swordmaster in the service of House Atreides, and one of Duke Leto’s right-hand men, with Gurney Halleck and Thufir Hawat. Duncan Idaho was said to be very handsome. He had black, curly hair, a dark complexion, and green or blue eyes. During the days of the original Duncan Idaho, and during the time of the God Emperor, he was regarded as something of a ladies’ man.”

This sounds like Momoa will bring that Dothraki swagger to the role of Idaho. This may be what you’d call an embarrassment of riches. Villeneuve must have written a stellar script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The cast at this point is only missing There Will Be Blood’s Daniel Day-Lewis.

Dune will be produced by Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter. Thomas Tull will executive produce the project with members of the Frank Herbert estate, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert. The Dune novels tell the story of Paul Atreides. His family transitions into control of the resource known as Spice that is mined on the desert planet Arrakis at the risk of falling victim to massive sandworms. Replete with political intrigue, and nasty interstellar creatures that sound like something out of a Guillermo del Toro nightmare. Take for instance the description of the Guild Navigators found in a Dune prequel novel. “Her direct physical senses were deadened, and Norma no longer cared about taste, touch, or smell … She found it remarkable to see webbing between her fingers and toes. Her face, once blunt-featured and later flawlessly beautiful, now had a small mouth and tiny eyes surrounded by smooth folds. Her head was immense, while the rest of her body atrophied to a useless appendage.” Yikes! Dune is set to release sometime in 2020.
