Jon Favreau Says Robert Downey Jr. Has To Direct Or ‘I’m Not Going To Be His Friend Anymore’

Growing up, Jon Favreau has always been, somewhere. From playing a clown on Seinfeld, to a billionaire boyfriend of Monica Gellar on Friends. Favreau seems to just keep popping up in some of the best possible places. After he conquered sitcoms, he made what was perhaps his best impact as portraying Happy Hogan in Iron Man, oh and he also directed the film.

Of course, it was actor Robert Downey Jr. that starred in that film over a decade ago, and while Downey Jr.’s career is likely heading to explore new territory, Favreau thinks it would be a shame if one of those territories was stepping behind the camera. Favreau recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and threatened to unfriend Downey Jr. if he didn’t do some directing, like real-life unfriending, not Facebook style.

“I don’t know what he’s thinking [in regards to his post-MCU career], but he better direct. Otherwise, I’m not going to be his friend anymore. He’s the star of the biggest movie of all time. He did it. So now, you better do stuff you love. Because if you can’t do what you love, how are you going to inspire everybody else out there who’s climbing that ladder? He has a lot of passion. He’s an artist: He understands visual art, he understands music. I think he would be a hell of a director. I hope I get to have a part if he ever decides to direct because I want to show him what it felt like when I was directing him. I want to give him the other side of that equation.”

Favreau is not exaggerating one bit when he spoke of the many talents of RDJ. Have you folks heard the man sing on stage with Sting? I’m not even really a fan of Sting or The Police, but it sure is cool to see Tony Stark rock out.

It sure would be nice to have RDJ direct a film taking place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that’s some comic book geek poetry right there. Even if he helmed a non-MCU film, I for one would be very interested in the finished product

Being part of the birth of the greatest shared universe the screen has ever seen, and perhaps the rebirth of Robert Downey Jr.’s career (though some attribute Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to being the first step back for RDJ). Favreau now finds himself working on arguably the biggest franchise ever, Star Wars. Favreau’s Disney+ series, The Mandalorian will be released in just over a couple months when the streaming platform launches in November.

“Directed by Robert Downey Jr.,” sounds good, right? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
