Men In Black on Track For Underwhelming $24M Opening

It’s been a solid seven years since the Men in Black last suited up on the big screen with MIB 3. That threequel saw Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ tenure as the good guys dressed in black come to an end, paving the way for an eventual reboot…which we’re getting this very weekend. Of course, instead of Smith and Jones, we now have Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth at the forefront, who last worked together in the hit film Thor: Ragnarok.

Will this chemistry carry over to bring box office success to their latest project? Sadly, all signs are pointing to a disappointing weekend. Variety is reporting that the film is on track to take in $24 million in its opening weekend in North America. This number falls short of the already-conservative estimate of $30 million.

If these estimates prove true, this would be a franchise-low performance by a mile. The original film managed to take in $51.1 million in its opening weekend — and that was over 20 years ago! More recently, MIB 3 took in $54.6 million domestically in its first weekend. It was a bit more than its predecessors, but even then, nothing to write home about. This latest entry really does show that audiences aren’t willing to go out and see EVERYTHING they recognize out there.

Based on traffic on our site alone for this film, enthusiasm already seemed pretty muted, but add in the low critical reception, and you have a recipe for another summer disappointment.
